Monument Engineering Group Associates, INC. (MEGA) provided construction material testing services for a 90 space, privately owned vehicle (POV), surface parking lot adjacent to an active VA medical hospital (the John D Dingell, VAMC) in Detroit, MI. Project included the removal and disposal of existing unsuitable aggregate material from existing temporary parking area. Addition of parameter concrete curb & gutter, curb islands, light poles, and additional drainage structures. Traffic coordination to relocate vehicles utilizing the parking area, maintaining access for both emergency and private vehicles during construction was a requirement. MEGA provided construction material testing and consulting services acting as the owner (VA's) representative during the course of construction. Material testing included initial sampling and sieve analysis of imported material, consult of proposed geo-fabric, review of mix designs (both asphalt and concrete), soil moisture testing, soil density testing, concrete testing (slump test, cylinder compression testing, air entrainment), asphalt testing (density), shop drawing review and observation of installation of underground drainage system. Project was a sole sourced procurement to MEGA. MEGA also provided, at no additional fees, minor consulting on storm system design, suggesting minor changes that assisted in the overall constructability of the system. Field technicians coordinated with the site contractor to insure a firm schedule was met to insure that the parking lot was open for use by the prescribed time. MEGA's services were performed to the VA's satisfaction, on time and within budget.
